A Credentialed Optometrist, is authorised by CASA to evaluate the vision and eye health of pilots and aviation personnel. Credentialed Optometrist possesses specific expertise in assessing visual capabilities according to the requirements set by aviation regulatory authorities.
During your visit, the Credentialed Optometrist will conduct various tests to evaluate your visual acuity, refractive error, depth perception, peripheral vision, and overall eye health. They use specialized equipment to perform these assessments. An appointment is typically 1.5 hours. If cycloplegic refraction is required, vision will be blurry for 3 hours after cycloplegic eye drops.
While Credentialed Optometrists primarily focus on assessing vision, they may provide initial treatment for certain eye conditions. However, if extensive treatment or specialized care is required, they may refer you to an appropriate eye care specialist.
If your vision falls short of the requirements, it may mean that you are currently unfit for certain aviation roles. However, the Credentialed Optometrist may suggest corrective measures or treatment options to improve your vision. You can then re-evaluate your eligibility.
It's advisable to bring documents from CASA, any previous eye health records or prescription eyewear you may have. Additionally, if you wear contact lenses, the Credentialed Optometrist may request that you refrain from wearing them for a certain period before the examination.
