ORTHOK NIGHT CONTACT LENSES

ORTHOKERATOLOGY NIGHT LENSES

Orthokeratology, also known as ortho-k or night contact lenses, is a non-surgical, reversible method of correcting refractive errors such as shortsighted (myopia), astigmatism, and longsighted. The contact lenses are worn overnight while sleeping for clear vision in your waking hours and slow myopia progression.

What are the advantages of orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology provides clear vision without the need for glasses or day contact lenses, making it appealing for people who are active or want to be glasses free.

Ortho-k is commonly used in children to significantly slow down the progression of myopia, therefore decreasing the risk of myopia related ocular diseases. It is also an alternative for those who are wearing daily soft contact lenses and experiencing very dry eyes.

How does orthokeratology work?

Ortho-k lenses are custom-made based on the measurements of your eyes. These contact lenses gently reshape the cornea while they are worn during sleep. The changes induced by the lenses compensate for the refractive error, effectively improving your vision.

Is orthokeratology permanent?

The effects of orthokeratology are temporary, and regular nightly use of the lenses is necessary to maintain the corrected vision. If the lenses are discontinued, the cornea will gradually return to its original shape and refractive error. Whereas refractive laser surgery makes permanent alterations to the cornea.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at eyedefinition.optometrists@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The optometrist assesses your prescription and performs a corneal topography (a detailed and non invasive scan of the curvature of the front of your eyes). They will determine whether or not you are suitable for ortho-k and the expecations for your following consultations.

You are also welcome to ask our friendly optometrists questions about ortho-k lenses.

There is an intial fitting consult when your custom made orthok lenses has arrived. The optometrist assesses the fit of the lens on the eye, teach you how to insert and remove the orthok lens, and how to take the best care of your lenses.

The follow up appointments will generally be 1 week after, 2 weeks after, and 4 weeks after, then 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months. An appointment the day after the first night consult may be considered at the discretion of the optometrist.

For many patients, vision does not become clear immediately when starting Ortho-K. Your vision will typically improve progressively over the first few nights as the cornea responds to the lenses.

We understand that you still need to see clearly for work, driving, school and everyday life while this is happening.

To make the transition easier, Eye Definition Optometrists can provide temporary glasses or soft contact lenses during this adjustment period, so you are not left struggling with blurred vision while waiting for your Ortho-K treatment to stabilise.

Our aim is to make the transition to Ortho-K as smooth and practical as possible, while keeping you comfortable and able to go about your normal day.

Yes. Certain Ortho-K designs can also be used to correct some degrees of long-sightedness (hyperopia). At Eye Definition Optometrists, we have extensive experience fitting Ortho-K for long-sighted prescriptions.

Long-sighted Ortho-K can require a more customised approach than standard Ortho-K, which is why experience with these types of prescriptions is important.

If you are long-sighted and interested in Ortho-K, we'd be happy to assess your eyes and talk you through what may be achievable for your particular prescription.
